God Will Never Give Up on You, So Don't Give Up on Him
You know the feeling. You are at your breaking point. Temptations have mounted their attack against you. The Devil is breathing down your neck to give up on Jesus. The last straw has broken in a long line of missed opportunities and setbacks. You can’t take another step. You have been talking to God, listening for an answer, wrestling with the truths of scripture against your circumstance. And it hits you… you are ready to give in and give up.
It is at this moment where you will make a crucial decision. Will you give up on God and undertake these issues and problems yourself or will you stand firm against the attacks of Satan (Eph. 6:11-13) and allow God to strengthen and provide for you? The Devil wants you to give up. He is banking on you doubting God and throwing in the towel. But what you may not realize is that while this season of life has been more than difficult, God has not left your side, even for a moment.
Let me show you what I mean. When Moses, the greatest prophet in the Bible, the man who led over a million people out of Egypt dies, God raised up Moses’ aid, Joshua to take the reins. Joshua did not think he was ready. The people were unruly, they disobeyed God time and again, and complained about everything. And to add fuel to the fire, Joshua was to take this group of untrained people into the Promised Land and conquer its inhabitants and take the land for Israel. How could this happen? What was God thinking? Wasn’t this task too big for Joshua to undertake? How can we make it without Moses? These are the questions and feelings of Joshua and the nation of Israel?
God knew Joshua’s thoughts and the thoughts of the Israelites. God gave them encouragement to complete the task and assurance that he would never leave them. In Deuteronomy 31:6 the Lord tells the people,
“Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
God did not tell them there would not be a fight. He did not tell them it would be easy. He did not tell them the fight would not cost them. He made none of these promises but notice what he did tell them. He told them to be strong and courageous. There will be trials, dangers, and circumstances beyond your control and God knows this. God will never minimize the importance or difficulty of a situation, but just as with the nation of Israel, he calls us to be strong and courageous.
But how can we be strong and courageous in the face of danger, difficulty, or the unknown? We can be strong and courageous before any enemy and every danger because of this great truth:
THE GOD OF HEAVEN AND EARTH PERSONALLY FIGHTS FOR US!
Did you catch that? There is not a single battle you will ever fight yourself. The same Jesus who defeated sin and death on your behalf is the same Jesus who is with you when a loved one dies; he is the same Jesus who is with you in the battle against addiction; he is the same Jesus who is with you when your bank account reads $0.00, and he is the same Jesus who walks with you through depression and difficulty. Jesus will NEVER leave you alone. As a matter of fact, he goes before you into battle and is fighting on your behalf when you don’t even realize it. An even more encouraging and powerful truth in this verse is the fact that God will not fail, ever! Jesus will never fail you. Can you imagine such a claim? It is one thing to say, “I won’t ever leave you.” Jesus is on another level when he says, “There will never be a battle that I walk into that I will not win,” but this is exactly what he says, and he says it on your behalf.
You may be at the point of giving in and giving up. Don’t. You may think you have been fighting this battle alone, but you have had the Commander of the Armies of Heaven in front of you the entire time. How else do you think you have made it this far? None of us could withstand the first attack on our own. Jesus himself is in the battle with us. He draws near to us when we are weak. He pulls out the arrow and mends our wounds when we are hit. He does emergency surgery on us when we are struck down and he picks us up and carries us when we cannot take another step.
So, don’t give up on God when it seems too tough to stand when the end is nowhere in sight. God has not and never will give up on you. Jesus fought all the armies of hell for your salvation and satisfied the requirements of sin. He has built you a mansion in glory and is right now praying to the Father for you. He has promised to win every battle he enters into with you. Never give up on God, because he will never give up on you.
Blessing,
Brad
